The Oldest House-Key West
I’ve always loved Key West and dream of having a home there someday. My husband and I visit often, and on each trip, I try to discover a new museum or hidden gem I haven’t explored yet. On our most recent visit, I finally stopped by the Oldest House Museum and Gardens—a place I’d read about in one of my favorite series, The Key West Food Critic Mysteries by Lucy Burdette.
Lucy often weaves local landmarks into her stories (there are 15 books in the series), and her vivid descriptions of the museum and its lush backyard gardens made it a must-see for me.
Tucked away at 322 Duval Street—between Caroline and Eaton—The Oldest House Museum and Gardens is a beautiful slice of well preserved history. You enter through a charming gift shop filled with books (my favorite souvenir), unique and beautiful works of local art, and assorted gift items. That was where I met Ann-Marie.
Ann-Marie’s family has called Key West home since the 1860s, and her children represent the fourth generation living there. She brings the Oldest House to life with fascinating stories—not just about the home’s layered history and interesting chain of ownership, but also about growing up in a Key West that’s almost unrecognizable today.
One of the highlights of our conversation was hearing her share memories of the island’s transformation over the years and some cool stories involving Ernest Hemingway.
Ann-Marie spoke with heartfelt pride about the people who had the foresight to fight for conservation and preservation—visionaries whose efforts ensured that places like this stunning home and garden still exist for us to enjoy.
Please stop by and spend some time at the Oldest House Museum and Gardens next time you’re in Key West. You won’t be disappointed!
